Understanding AI and Data Literacy

The chart was right. The conclusion was not.

Every organization now hands its staff dashboards, reports, and AI generated summaries, and assumes they can read them. Most cannot, not because they are innumerate, but because nobody ever taught them the questions: where did this come from, what is missing, and what would have to be true for this conclusion to hold.

AI has made this urgent rather than academic. A tool will now generate an analysis, in confident prose, from data it does not understand, and hand it to someone who cannot check it. The output looks like the work of an analyst. It is not, and the difference matters at the moment a decision gets made.

Operations and department leaders use this where decisions are being made on dashboards nobody questions. HR and learning and development leaders use it where data-informed is a stated value and the underlying skill was never built. Exercises use your own reports and dashboards where possible.

Content, scenarios, and examples are built around your actual work and your approved tools before delivery. Most groups train live online, and on-site in-person delivery is available by request. Description

The session opens on charts, and specifically on how an honest chart misleads. Participants work through truncated axes, missing baselines, cherry-picked ranges, and aggregations that hide the thing that matters. Most find an example from their own reporting within the first hour.

The middle is the questions underneath the number. Where did this data come from, who is in it and who is missing, what was measured versus what was intended, and what happened to the outliers. Participants practice on real data, including the uncomfortable case where the answer to a question is that nobody knows.

The last stretch is AI generated analysis. Participants learn why a model can produce a fluent, structured, entirely wrong interpretation of a dataset, how to check its arithmetic and its reasoning separately, and when to trust a tool for summarizing versus for concluding. They leave able to push back on a number rather than forward it.
