Performance tools increasingly arrive with analytics attached. Activity dashboards, productivity scores, engagement signals, flags on individuals. The pitch is objectivity. The reality is that a system is measuring what is easy to measure and a manager is deciding what it means.
This workshop is about that gap, and it is a small workshop about a narrow thing because the stakes are specific. A performance decision affects someone's livelihood, is subject to appeal, and may have to be explained to HR, a union, or a court. An answer of the system flagged them is not an answer.
HR leaders use this before or during a rollout of any performance tool with analytics attached. Senior leaders use it where managers are already being handed scores they did not ask for and cannot interrogate. It is built for environments where employment decisions carry real procedural obligations, including public sector and unionized settings. Course outline
How the workshop runs
Every session is live with a real instructor, and the exercises are built around your team's work.
The session opens on what these systems actually measure, which is never performance. It is activity, output volume, response time, tool usage. Participants work through why a proxy drifts from the thing it stands for, and what happens when people learn what is being counted, which they always do.
The middle is fairness and explainability in practice. Participants learn how a system can produce systematically different results across groups without anyone intending it, why they may be unable to explain a score they are being asked to act on, and what to do in that situation. They practice the conversation with an employee who wants to know why the number says what it says.
The last stretch is the boundary. Participants work out which decisions can be informed by a system and which cannot be delegated to one, how to use analytics as a prompt to look rather than a conclusion to act on, and how to document a decision so that it stands up when the reasoning is questioned later.
