Search Engine Optimization for Beginners teaches you the best practices that help your website appear higher in search rankings. SEO is constantly evolving, but many proven, time tested methods still work, and they are surprisingly approachable in this hands-on class. This class helps you avoid the frustration of guessing by teaching current best practices, guided by an experienced search marketing instructor.
Every business today needs an SEO plan built into its website and marketing so that people can find it. What has changed is search itself. Google now shows AI Overviews on many searches, and people increasingly look for answers inside AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. The good news for beginners is that the foundations that help you rank, clear structure, helpful content, and signals of trust, are the same foundations that help AI systems find and cite you. In this class you will learn those basics and how to optimize your website to increase traffic and the time visitors spend on your site.
You will start from scratch and work with your instructor through the core of an SEO plan, from keyword research and on-page optimization to technical basics, content, links, and measurement. The class is hands-on and intensive, and it is designed to make difficult topics easier to understand so you leave able to run an SEO plan on your own, avoid the common mistakes that hold rankings back, and understand where search is heading.
What you'll learn at a glance
- Understand how search engines crawl, index, and rank pages, and where AI Overviews fit in
- Research keywords and search intent, including the longer, more specific queries people use today
- Apply on-page optimization to titles, headings, content, and internal links
- Cover technical basics such as site speed, mobile friendliness, crawlability, and structured data
- Write helpful, answer first content that supports E-E-A-T, meaning experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness
- Understand links and off-site signals that build authority and trust
- See how search is expanding to AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, and what that means for beginners
- Measure results in Google Search Console and Google Analytics and track the metrics that matter
- Recognize and avoid the common beginner mistakes that waste effort or hurt rankings
