Microsoft Excel Beginners (Level 1)

Most people learned Excel by watching someone else do it wrong.

Almost nobody was taught Excel. They watched a colleague, copied a file that already existed, and built from there. It works until the file gets big or the person who built it leaves, and then nobody can safely change anything.

This workshop replaces improvisation with foundation. Participants learn why a spreadsheet built one way survives and another falls over, what a cell reference actually does, and the handful of functions that cover most real work. Most discover they have been doing something manually for years that takes one formula.

HR and learning and development leaders use this for new hires and for staff who list Excel on a resume and use ten percent of it. Operations managers use it where reporting errors are traced back to a spreadsheet nobody understands. Exercises use your data and your reporting formats.

Content, datasets, and examples are built around your actual work before delivery. Most groups train live online, and on-site in-person delivery is available by request. This workshop is available by request only, with a three participant minimum, and sits alongside our other data analytics and data literacy workshops.

This course includes

  • Live, instructor led workshop delivered in two sessions
  • Hands on work using your own data and reporting formats
  • Foundations in structure, formulas, references, and formatting
  • Practice fixing broken spreadsheets, not just building new ones
  • Digital learning materials and take home reference guides
  • Certificate of completion for every participant

Description

The first session is structure. Participants learn to lay out data so it can be sorted, filtered, and summarized later, which is the decision that determines whether a spreadsheet is useful in six months. They work on entering data cleanly, using tables rather than loose ranges, and formatting for a reader rather than for themselves.

The second session is formulas. Participants build up from arithmetic to the functions that carry most workplace analysis, and learn what relative and absolute references actually do, which is the single most common source of errors they will produce. They practice fixing broken formulas rather than only writing new ones.

The workshop closes on the work Excel should be doing for them: sorting, filtering, conditional formatting, and basic charts. Participants leave having rebuilt something they actually use, and knowing why the new version will not break.

  • Use the core functions that cover most workplace analysis
  • Diagnose and fix a broken formula
  • Sort, filter, and conditionally format to find what matters
  • Build a basic chart that communicates rather than decorates
