The Pocket: An Interactive Leadership Keynote Where Your Audience Becomes the Band

This September, I debuted my signature keynote, The Pocket: Why the Best Teams Sound Like a Great Band, at the 2026 Northern Colorado Workforce Symposium at Aims Community College. A room full of HR professionals, supervisors, and workforce development leaders spent 45 minutes clapping on 2 and 4, diagnosing why their teams drift out of sync, and deciding together which work belongs to AI and which work must stay human. Nobody checked their phone.

Why event planners are searching for interactive keynote speakers

Every conference has the same quiet failure mode: a credentialed expert delivers a polished slide deck, the audience nods politely, and by the afternoon break nobody can name a single thing they intend to do differently. I have been a professional drummer for more than 30 years, and I have spent 20 of those years building and leading teams as the founder of a workforce training center. The Pocket is what those two rooms taught me about the same lesson.

In a band, the pocket is the moment when every musician locks into the same groove. You cannot see it on a spreadsheet, but everyone can feel it, and everyone knows immediately when it is gone. Teams at work are the same. The keynote makes that feeling physical:

The whole room becomes the band. Within the first three minutes, several hundred people are clapping a backbeat together. Then I shift the tempo without warning, and the groove collapses. That collapse is the fastest explanation of unannounced organizational change you will ever witness, and the room laughs while it lands.

A live looping demo makes AI tangible. Using a drum pad and looper, I build a groove layer by layer, then let the loop carry the repetitive parts while I play on top of it. The loop is automation: perfect, tireless, and lifeless on its own. The human on top is where feel, judgment, and creativity live. In an era when every leader is being told to adopt AI, this five-minute demonstration reframes the entire conversation: automate the loop, protect the live.

Every metaphor lands on a tool. Attendees leave with the 3-Sentence Count-In for communicating change, a team alignment diagnostic, a Loop or Live worksheet for AI adoption decisions, and pulse survey questions they can deploy the following Monday. The full toolkit is delivered digitally, so the session keeps working after the applause ends.
