Basic Digital Literacy Checklist

Basic Digital Literacy is a requirement for countless positions in today’s workforce, and is a basic minimum pre-requisite for enrollment at DWC.  It may sound funny to some, but every student must be able to navigate basic computer functions to be able to thrive in the classroom.

If you have any questions on what we expect for your basic digital literacy, we encourage you to speak to our Admissions team.

We have also put together this basic digital literacy checklist for you to review:

  1. Device Basics
  •    Turn a computer, tablet, or smartphone on and off.
  •    Navigate the desktop and use the Start menu or applications folder.
  •    Identify and use basic computer accessories (e.g., mouse, keyboard, webcam, headphones).
  1. Operating Systems  & File Management
  •    Save, open, and organize files and folders. 
  •    Use basic functions of the operating system (e.g., copy/paste, screenshot, volume control).  
  •    Recognize and perform basic troubleshooting steps (e.g., restart, adjust settings).  
  1. Internet Navigation 
  •    Use a web browser (e.g., Chrome, Edge, Firefox) to visit websites.  
  •    Perform basic searches using a search engine.  
  •    Recognize secure websites and avoid unsafe links.  
  1. Email and Communication
  •    Send, receive, and reply to emails.  
  •    Attach and download files to/from emails.  
  •    Use professional and respectful communication in emails.  
  1. Online Meeting Platforms  
  •    Join a virtual meeting (e.g., Zoom)  
  •    Use basic features such as mute/unmute, video on/off, and chat.  
  •    Share your screen during a meeting when requested.  
  1. Typing and Document Creation 
  •    Type with reasonable speed and accuracy.  
  •    Create, save, and format basic documents using word processing tools (e.g., Google Docs, Microsoft Word).  
  •    Edit and share documents with others.  
  1. Account Management  
  •    Create and manage accounts for online tools or services.  
  •    Set up secure passwords and understand basic cybersecurity (e.g., avoid phishing).  
  •    Log in and log out of systems securely.  
  1. Time Management Tools  
  •    Use a digital calendar to schedule appointments and set reminders.  
  •    Access and use task management or productivity tools (e.g., Trello, Google Keep).  
  1. Software Installation and Updates 
  •    Download and install basic software or applications.  
  •    Update software as needed.  
  1. Troubleshooting and Help-Seeking  
  •     Follow basic troubleshooting steps for common issues (e.g., internet connection, audio not working).  
  •     Use help features in software or search online for solutions to problems.
